James Wehn, 10 May 2021: title changed to better reflect content of the image, a scene from a kabuki play, which recurs over time. This particular version portrays a scene from "Onoe Kikugorô ichidai banashi" (The Lifetime of Onoe Kikugorô III), a retirement performance reprising various kabuki scenes/roles performed by Onoe Kikugorô III during his career. Onoe Kikugorô III (center) performs the role of the Cat Witch of Okabe from the kabuki play Gojusan-tsugi no uchi [Okazaki no ba] (Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road: Scene at Okazaki). (Previous title was "Kabuki actor Onoe Kikugorô III as the Cat Witch of Okabe.") According to the online catalogue raisonne of Kuniyoshi's prints, the actors are Ichimura Uzaemon XII as Inaba no suke (left), Onoe Kikugorô III as the cat-witch (center), and Sawamura Sojûrô V as Teranishi Kanshin (right). This catalogue also gives the date of the print as the 7th month of 1847.
