Found near Homs, Syria (ancient Emesa) they date to 450-462 A.D. according to related inscriptions now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Alexander the Great conquered Syria in the 4th century BC bringing with him Greek and Macedonian art, including the highly developed form of the mosaic. The Greek colony of Syria was taken over in the 1st century BC by the Romans, who also used mosaics in their houses. These mosaics are part of larger composition, probably a floor done in hunting motifs, given a leopard about to pounce on the gazelle's back (1972.17) and a rabbit chased by a dog that is curved in the opposite direction, forming an arc (1972.18). Motifs on the other two consist of a rooster, a pheasant, a bull, and a buck deer imposed on a complex vine pattern (1972.20), and an amphora flanked by two peacocks with their backs to the vessel, while two doves on the back side of the lip face one another.
