In 1934, under the auspices of the federally-funded Public Works of Art Project, he created a series of paintings that he called "Machinery"; this painting is from this series. The composition of gears, wheels, and pulleys set against a stylized architectural backdrop was influenced by his early training as an architect and his work in a terra cotta factory. In the "Machinery" series Kelpe attempted to create recognizable subject matter (encouraged by PWAP administrators) while furthering his explorations of abstract stylistic techniques. Kelpe's flattening of space and the overall surface pattern of small brushstrokes reinforce the abstract nature of these works.
