Eugène-Louis Boudin, (1824–1898)
User Text 1 Eugène-Louis Boudin is an important transitional figure between the carefully observed naturalism of the Barbizon School, and the brilliant light and fluid brushwork characteristic of impressionism. The Barbizon School painters are recognized as the first to paint outdoors, en plein air, a practice which Boudin continued throughout his career. The son of a mariner, Boudin was born and grew up along the Normandy coast of France, which became the primary subject matter of his paintings. Although Boudin studied in Paris and traveled regularly throughout Europe, he always returned to his hometown of Honfleur, to paint by the sea. With a luminous palette and quick, loose brushwork, Boudin masterfully captures the light and atmosphere of this scene at Étretat, a small fishing village near Honfleur. Storm clouds, now gathered over a tiny white chapel on the bluff, have cleared above a stretch of rocky beach where a group of fishing boats are docked. The agitated movement and sparkling reflections of the ocean further display Boudin’s ability to evoke the light and weather conditions of this location.
