Antonio di Puccio Pisano, called Pisanello

(ca. 1394–1455)
Pisanello, Antonio Pisano. b. ca. 1395-1455. Pisanello, the first and greatest of medalists, was famous as a painter before making his first medallion in 1438. Thus he signs many of his medals 'Opus Pisani Pictoris', the "work of Pisano the Painter." His medals were cast rather than struck, a method which permitted greater subtlety of modeling. As a fine portraitist, he took great pains with the reverses as well, showing a special fondness for animal figures. As one of the earliest followers of modern realism, Pisanello was highly praised by his contemporaries and enjoyed a great reputation before 1438 as both a portraitist and monumental painter. His medals were renowned during his time (and remain so today) for the fidelity of their portraits, and for their creative, yet complete compositional arrangements within the limitations of a circle.
