Francesco Laurana
(ca. 1420–ca. 1502)
Laurana was born in Dalmatia and worked in Italy under Brunelleschi, c. 1444. He was a painter, sculptor, and medallist, and worked in Naples and Sicily until around 1471. He later worked in France. Consequently, almost all his medals by 1477 were portraits of French men and women. Laurana was the favorite sculptor/medallist of Rene of Anjou. Furthermore, his name has been intimately connected with colleague and medallist Pietro da Milano.
